West Virginia Information
West Virginia is the only state entirely encompassed by the Appalachian Mountain region, prompting the state’s nickname and motto, and influencing its culture. West Virginia has a strong folk heritage that emphasizes music and religion. The region that is now West Virginia was the site of many historic events, including battles of the American Revolutionary and Civil Wars. West Virginia separated from Virginia during the Civil War, and was the only state to form by seceding from a Confederate state.
